What is a RAM Bottleneck?

A RAM bottleneck occurs when your system doesn't have enough physical memory to store the assets a game or application needs right now. When this happens, Windows is forced to use your storage drive (SSD/HDD) as overflow memory (the page file).

Because even the fastest NVMe SSD is thousands of times slower than RAM, this causes severe frame drops, massive stuttering, and texture pop-in.

Capacity vs. Speed

  • Capacity:If you hit 100% capacity, performance falls off a cliff. For modern AAA games, 16GB is the bare minimum, and 32GB is recommended.
  • Speed:If you have enough capacity but slow speed (e.g., DDR4-2133), your CPU has to wait longer for data to arrive. This reduces your 1% low framerates and causes micro-stuttering, especially at 1080p.
